The Retreat, a winner of a Sussex Heritage Trust Award, is a secluded home organised in to two wings, centred around a shared entrance space. One wing features double-height vaulted ceilings to accommodate living spaces whilst the other is split across two levels, housing private bedrooms and bathrooms. Vaulted ceilings and strategically positioned corner sliding doors establish a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The organic material palette also includes feature timber cladding which was reclaimed from an old church floor.
The visiting awards jury had this to say about the project; 'The owners demolished a clumsy annexe linked to a listed building and built this charming, well designed stand-alone annexe using reclaimed timber cladding. The annexe sits very well in its surrounding with excellent landscaping which is a 'tour de force'! We commend the owners and designers for creating this sympathetic, innovative building!'
Our 'Highly Commended' Tarrant Street project involved the rebuilding of a derelict Georgian stable yard within the curtilage of a Grade II listed townhouse. New studio spaces have been installed at the foot of a 260 year old flint and lime mortar retaining wall. The build is finished with brick, flint and slate to reflect the character of the original stables and utilises solar energy to power the studio, primary dwelling along with the owner's electric vehicles.
The visiting judges commented; 'The new stables, although contemporary in style, use appropriate and sympathetic materials of quality to create a studio and home office. The owner has taken the opportunity to use this project to generate ‘free’ electricity for the host property which is located at the rear.'
Thank you to our clients and all of the fantastic consultants who have contributed to these two schemes which we are hugely proud of.
